The refrigerator works 24/7 to keep your food fresh. But did you know that proper maintenance can reduce energy consumption and improve food preservation? Here’s how to keep it efficient and hygienic.

Why maintenance is important

  • Worn-out seals: they let cold air escape, increasing energy consumption.
  • Excessive frost: reduces space and makes the compressor work harder.
  • Bad odors: a sign of hidden bacteria and mold.
  • Excessive condensation: can damage food and internal components.

How to keep your fridge always efficient

Deep cleaning involves emptying the fridge completely, removing shelves and drawers, and using the right products. The fridge stores everything from leftovers to raw meat and sauces, often causing unpleasant odors.

  1. Regular interior cleaning: clean monthly with baking soda or a specific product such as Care+Protect Universal Refrigerator Cleaner which is a fast-acting formula that eliminates dirt, mould and bad odours.
  2. Use a pipette to make sure the drainage hole is open and condensation water can drain away
  3. Defrost the freezer (if necessary) If your fridge does not have the No Frost function, defrost it every 3-6 months. The Care+Protect Universal Quick Defrost for fridges and freezers quickly melts the ice, improving the efficiency of the appliance and reducing energy consumption.
  4. Check the gaskets
  • Clean them regularly with baking soda or a degreaser
  • Check that they close tightly to avoid energy wastage and ensure proper storage. If they are squashed you can fix them by spreading them apart with your fingers, but if they are damaged they need to be replaced.

5. Organise food properly: do not overload, do not put hot food in and leave space for cold air to circulate.

How to defrost the freezer: step by step

1. Empty the freezer and place food in thermal bags or another freezer to keep them at the right temperature. If possible, defrost when the freezer is less full for an easier process.

2. Turn off and unplug the appliance to work safely.

3. Protect the surrounding area from water by placing towels or cloths around the freezer base to absorb melting ice.

4. Speed up ice melting:

  • Hot water method: place a pot or bowl with hot water inside the freezer and close the door. The steam helps melt the ice faster. Use a support to protect internal surfaces.
  • Spray bottle with hot water and vinegar: alternatively, use a spray bottle with a hot water and white vinegar or lemon juice solution, spraying it directly on the icy walls.

5. Remove melted ice using plastic or wooden spatulas to gently detach ice. Avoid sharp or metal objects that could damage internal walls.

6. Clean and dry the interior after removing all ice. Clean with a baking soda and water solution or water and vinegar to sanitize and neutralize odors. Dry all surfaces thoroughly with a soft cloth to prevent immediate frost formation.

7. Reconnect and restart the freezer.

Dos and don’ts for an efficient fridge

  • Check the temperature: 3-5°C for the fridge, -18°C for the freezer.
  • Let hot food cool down before placing it in the fridge.
  • Clean the condensation drain every 2-3 months.
  • Don’t overfill the fridge: cold air must circulate.
  • Avoid leaving the door open for too long.
  • Don’t use a hairdryer to defrost the freezer: it can damage plastics, components, and seals.
